As You Like It
We’re kicking off our season with a selection for our annual Shakespeare Festival: A Rapid Reading of Shakespeare’s As You Like It adapted for ten professional actors by David Catanzarite thanks to our friend at Drama Notebook.
As You Like It is the most genderbending of Shakespeare’s comedies and features Shakespeare’s best female character, Rosalind. You will be sure to recognize the Bard’s most popular soliloquy, “The Seven Ages of Man”:
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,”
Our touring production of Maggie Magalita in February and March 2024, will be paired with anti-bullying discussions for teens featuring Boo2Bullying and the Ophelia Project.
This moving bilingual drama by Wendy Kesselman (Tony nominee for The Diary of Anne Frank), features an immigrant teen living with her mom in a tiny apartment. Maggie tries to quash her childhood memories of being cruelly bullied until her widowed grandmother comes to live with them. Maggie must work out a balance between her Latina roots and her new life in America.
Our final production, presented in May and June will be an original play made possible by a large grant from the the Inland Empire’s Creative Corps Development Project. Work has already begun on this innovative yearlong theatre project to be devised by a collective of Inland Empire actors, designers, writers and researchers.
This innovative theatre event will address the many complex layers in the history of Section 14, a one-square-mile tract in downtown Palm Springs. In the mid-sixties the homes of Latino, Black, and other families were bulldozed and burned to make way for development. Green Room’s new play will tell the story by honoring the diverse perspectives of the Agua Caliente Band, the City of Palm Springs, state and national government, and the survivors of the Section 14 neighorhood.
