Told through a bilingual assemblage of short scenes and poetry, Black Butterfly shines a light on the lives of four teen girls of various ages growing up poor in East Los Angeles. Parents won’t speak English; girls in magazines don’t look like the girl in the mirror; boys are not always searching for the right kind of relationship. Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Pinata Woman, and Other Superhero Girls, Like Me, takes a sad, funny, and sometimes painful look at being a teenage girl.
