INTERACTIVE READING OF "1984"

(Three actors will portray Winston, Julia and O’Brien.  Audience members will be invited to read for other roles)

The Thought Police invade everyone’s personal privacy on behalf of the all-knowing, all-powerful state. Lovers Winston and Julia make a quixotic attempt to evade discovery of their personal rebellion for as long as possible. Based on the prophetic novel by George Orwell, this riveting hit, first performed by the Actors’ Gang in Los Angeles and directed by Tim Robbins, addresses current issues, including “fake news”, ever-present technology, and the race for complete control by three rival superpowers. Green Room Theatre will present an interactive staged reading featuring three well-rehearsed professional leading actors, with all other roles performed by members of the audience.

Written by George Orwell.
Adapted for the stage by Michael Gene Sullivan.
Directed by Jerome Joseph Gentes.

The Newish Shakespeare Festival

Como Te Gusta

A compacted, one-hour adaptation of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in Spanish, cowboy English, and – por su puesto – Shakespeare’s original language.

Follow Rosalind as she flees the government of her nasty uncle, who has seized control of the state. Rosalind is exiled with her beloved cousin Celia to the enchanted Desert of Arden. In Arden Desert, they encounter an assortment of vivid characters, including Touchstone, the jester, and the melancholy cowhand Jaques, who expounds one of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches (“All the world’s a stage”). An evil duke, a treacherous brother, a faithful servant, and Shakespeare’s finest gender-bending love affair bring this timeless comedy to life in our local piece of the Sonoran desert.

American Moor

A veteran Black actor who loves Shakespeare auditions for a professional production of Othello with an inexperienced director who doesn’t know how little he understands about the hearts and minds of African American men and Black characters in Shakespeare. A penetrating, wickedly humorous examination of race, America’s Shakespeare industry, and the relationship between actors and the directors who have the power to cast them.  This (almost) one-man show is a perfect pairing of Eddie Stephens, winner of numerous Desert Star Awards, with the poetic brilliance of seasoned actor and playwright Keith Hamilton Cobb.
